DISK ONE

1-01

I’m Goin’ Wit’ You - Débruit, Om’Mas Keith & Woon

Written by Xavier Thomas (FRA), Om’Mas Keith (USA) & Jamie Woon (UK); produced by Débruit & Om’Mas Keith; vocals by Jamie Woon & Om’Mas Keith; background vocals by Cornelia Dahlgren (SWE)

Parisien master of not-noise Débruit comes with a beat that sounds like fingers running up and down the spine – the perfect foil for soul freak numero uno Om'Mas and balladeer boy wonder Jamie Woon to bust a sweat over.

1-02

Creepin’ - Cardopusher, Mushug & GoldieLocks

Written & produced by Luis Garban (ESP), Bruno Guichon (POR) & Sarah Louise Akwisombe (UK); vocals by GoldieLocks

We've often seen shadowy figures lurking around the jumble sale, forcing knitwear items on cracked-out old grannies. But now BCN-based Venezuelan Cardopusher steps into the light, flanked by Mushug and GoldieLocks for an I Will Survive for 2009, as the golden girl dishes out relationship advice to her pal.

1-03

Tee Times Two - Thibo Tazz & Tony Nwachukwu

Written & produced by Thabo Rasenyalo (RSA) & Tony Nwachukwu (UK)

Perfectly weighted filters rise up and down like Olympic relay runners, as Thibo and Tony Nwachukwu come out of the athlete’s village and really hit their stride for this deep 4/4 excursion. Once the starter gun is fired, all those hours of training pay off – as do the flexible knee joints.

1-04

Young Professionals - Piper Davis & Natalia Lafourcade

Written by Piper Davis (CAN) & Natalia Lafourcade (MEX); produced by Piper Davis; vocals by Piper Davis & Natalia Lafourcade

Sometimes you just know it's right – and like a Barcelona falafel at 4am, no questions need to be asked. Vancouverite Piper fuses her words with her beats between two hot plates. Add Natalia Lafourcade to the menu, and you’ve got a raw strut indeed. Tighter than a pair of drainpipes.

1-05

I’m So Over You - Cornelia, Om'Mas Keith & Robin Hannibal

Written & produced by Cornelia Dahlgren (SWE), Om'Mas Keith (USA) & Robin Braun (DEN); vocals by Cornelia

In a life filled with sunbeams and fresh seafood, you can still catch salmonella – and even the ocean gets the blues sometimes. Captain of the hook Cornelia makes a wrong turn down a windy alley around the Plaça del Rei, bringing her headlong into one of Om'Mas’ and Robin's unexpected chord changes.

1-06

Turtle Pizza Cadillacs - Robin Hannibal & Coco Solid

Written by Robin Braun (DEN) & Jessica Hansell (NZL); produced by Robin Hannibal; vocals by Coco Solid & Robin Hannibal; drums, bass, synthesizers & glockenspiel by Robin Hannibal

Mr Hannibal flexes digits behind the synths, while a menagerie of god’s creatures program the drum machine, and Coco Solid shows why she’s a true queen of pop fiction. In other words, it’s Kiwi Harry chilli dogs and chocolate milk to go from the Discoteria.

1-07

Fuckabout - GoldieLocks

Written by Sarah Louise Akwisombe (UK); produced by GoldieLocks & Mark Pritchard (UK)

Reality check from GoldieLocks, as she aims a blow right for the legs of the ATAK. Rallying the rebel forces of the knights that say "Pritch!" for a deep dancehall wind, it might sashay like a balmy breeze, but the cold snap can still bite.

1-08

Are You Satisfied - Onra, Fatima & Pursuit Grooves

Written & produced by Arnaud Bernard (FRA), Fatima Bramme Sey (UK) & Vanese Smith (USA); vocals by Pursuit Grooves & Fatima

Onra flips the organ chords, pitching the ground sheet for Fatima and Pursuit Grooves to build a tent big enough for us all to take shelter under. Round it off with some operatic harmonies and you've got a future classic that the clergy would be proud of.

1-09

Long Night - Siesta & Zinc

Written by Tan Ching Yi (CHN); produced by Siesta & Zinc (UK); vocals by Stamina MC (UK); guitar by Robin Hannibal (DEN); bass by Om’Mas Keith (USA); keyboards by Siesta; Fender Rhodes by Darren Ng (SIN) & Om’Mas Keith; Moog by Todd Osborn (USA)

DJ Siesta had never made a track before coming to the Academy, but one night in St Andreu, from dusk ‘til dawn she got to make like Tarantino channelling John Woo. Starring Robin Hannibal as John Travolta, DJ Zinc on cinematography and stage production, and Om’Mas as Mr. Pink. Featuring Stamina MC on the director’s cut. China, don’t sleep!

1-10

Help Me - Guillamino, Coco Solid & Violet

Written by Pau Guillamet (ESP), Jessica Hansell (NZL) & Maria Inés Borges Coutinho (POR); produced by Guillamino; vocals by Coco Solid, Violet & Guillamino; background vocals by Cornelia (SWE), Om’Mas Keith (USA), Jamie Woon (UK), Te’Amir Yohannes Sweeney (USA), Coco Solid, Violet & Guillamino

Whether SOS, SMS or BYO, we all need help sometimes, and Barna-boy done good Guillamino has penned this Moroccan gospel waltz just for the occasion. Kiwi contender Coco Solid and the-girl-most-lilacly-to Violet bring the fizz, joined by a chorus of Samaritans Sans Frontières.

1-11

Shoe Gazer - William Ricketts

Written & produced by William Ricketts (NZL); Moog Voyager & vibes by William Ricketts; vibes effects by Patrick Pulsinger (AUT); drums by Dizz1 (AUS); bass by N6el (DOM); guitar by Jamie Woon (UK)

This Phoenix Foundation troubadour wasn’t sure what the term ‘shoe gazing’ meant. So he lassooed the vibraphone, hitched up his Pro Tools and rode on down to the OK corral to find out. But instead of staring at his shoes, he found himself gazing at the clouds, with a little help from dreamers N6el, Jamie Woon and Dizz1.

1-12

Here Goes Nothing - Mano Le Tough

Written & produced by Niall Mannion (IRL)

This uprooted Celt must’ve spent many moons bouncing around the back streets of Berlin to arrive at this slice of techno: cantering like Bucephalus, on a leap-frog mission from one acid atmosphere to another.

1-13

Barcelona Boogie - Leyo

Written & produced by Leon de Raaff (NED); vocals by Leyo; guitar by Jamie Woon (UK); bass by Robin Hannibal (DEN); Fender Rhodes & Roland 101 by Todd Osborn (USA); percussion by Te’Amir Yohannes Sweeney (USA); drum programming by Leyo

Leyo channels Leroy on an uptempo boogie number, with Jamie wooing dames & gents on guitar, while synth-wizard Todd Osborn and first-bass-fumbler Robin Hannibal keep the back section jumping, and Te’Amir hits it with his Venice Beach rhythm stick. Stamp-collectors, stomp to this.

1-14

Daylight - Cornelia & Woon

Written & produced by Cornelia Dahlgren (SWE) & Jamie Woon (UK); vocals by Cornelia; backing vocals by Jamie Woon

A 21st century soundtrack to the supernatural occurrences in a snowy village in the North West, Special Agent Cooper would surely find no fault with this darkly innocent brew of Russian heart-twangs, Scandinavian sweetheart sighs and London blueberry rude-bwoy pie.

1-15

St Andreu Lonely Heartthrob Dubs - ISkream, U TorSan

Written by Torsten Schmidt (GER); produced by Torsten Schmidt (GER); synths, drums and bass-monging by Stöpzilla (GER); albino tutorial by Oliver Jones (UK)

When the t-shirt’s this tight, the massive don’t look so passive at all. These Croydon and Thalfang envoys stop by with the latest beast they’re strolling around with -– the squashed b-line alone barks like some mutated pet from the Mos Eisley Cantina. But what do you expect when the stakes is so high? Drama inna dance!

1-16

Timetravellin - Fatima & Dorian Concept

Written by Fatima Bramme Sey (UK) & Oliver Johnson (AUT); produced by Dorian Concept; vocals by Fatima

Salzburg's Johnson had to forge this beat out of molten bronze, hammers included. Somersaulting some old slavery rhythm, Dorian keeps it conceptual, while Fatima invites the whole church choir round for tea and cake. Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach can relax that someone picked up the baton. Members don't get weary!

1-17

Fabrica - sonicbrat

Written & produced by Darren Ng (SIN)

As a tribute to Fabra I Coats, the defunct factory that housed the Academy, Singapore’s top Brat collected sonic textures from textiles on the studio walls. Patchworked together with max/msp, he embroidered one of his trademark piano lines over the top.

DISC TWO

2-01

Do I Know You? - Fatima, Cohen, Cuthead & Dorian Concept

Written by Fatima Bramme Sey (UK) & Michael Cohen (ISR); produced by Cohen, Cuthead (GER) & Dorian Concept (AUT); vocals by Fatima; MPC by Cuthead; Juno, Moog Voyager & Roland SH-101 by Cohen & Dorian Concept

Taking a slot machine showtune and twisting it into something much less recognisable, our man from Tel Aviv keeps it cohesive, and together with the Dresden-Vienna alliance, lays the table perfectly for Swedish once-removed songstress Fatima to stack layers of déja-vu on. She got game, boy.

2-02

Phase2 - Desto feat. Wild Bill Ricketts

Written & produced by Risto Roman (FIN); percussion by Wild Bill Ricketts (NZL)

With a reggae b-line plodding through like a dinosaur-powered steam shovel, this tune is meatier than a brontosaurus burger. The ancient Finnish and New Zealand spice blend is a secret recipe though: you definitely won’t find this steppah combo at Rock Donald’s.

2-03

We Go Ridin’ - Dizz1 & Om’Mas Keith

Written & produced by Dave Norris (AUS) & Om’Mas Keith (USA); vocals by Om’Mas Keith; background vocals by Coco Solid (NZL), Violet (POR), Cornelia (SWE) & Subeena (UK)

Updating the baller anthem with a Sydney shrug, Dizz1 teams up with SA-RA low rider Om'Mas and a league of gentlewomen, with the only solution for how to avoid Las Vampyras Ramblas. No one's declining the Ferrari, as we head back to the club for some g-force grindin'. Ride with us.

2-04

Una Domenica Italiana - Cécile & Delphi feat. Dennis Coffey

Written & produced by Carlo Alberto Dall’Amico (ITA), Valerio Del Prete (ITA) & Marco Passarani (ITA); bass & synths by Cécile; guitar by Dennis Coffey (USA); programming by Delphi & Marco Passarani

Proper Italian job, my lover! Delphi and Cécile bridge the divide between the north and south with a disco chugger of epic proportions, pepped up with a strong cup of Coffey. These disciples of Santa Cecilia definitely know how to say “you've got stars in your eyes” like no one else – why no one thought to give HAL an Italian accent, we'll never know.

2-05

Get Your Laces Tight - Dimitri Ustinov, Cornelia & Om’Mas Keith

Written by Dimitri Ustinov (RUS), Cornelia Dahlgren (SWE) & Om’Mas Keith (USA); produced by Dimitri Ustinov & Robin Hannibal (DEN); vocals by Cornelia & Om’Mas Keith; background vocals by Om’Mas Keith; synths & bass by Dimitri Ustinov

Cornelia drapes herself over the groove, singing like astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper just 'lost' the keys to her flat while on a date. Dimitri delivers the bumping low end and harpsichord stabs, strengthening the Mosc-holm connection with every spacey effect. Even Bender could throw shapes to this.

2-06

Onix - Lukid

Written & produced by Luke Blair (UK), Oliver Johnson (AUT), Mark Pritchard (UK) & Tony Nwachukwu (UK); keyboards by Lukid, Dorian Concept & Mark Pritchard

Cool Hand Luke gets his low-slung wonkstep on for a Moog voyage into the belly of the disco beast. But it's a picnic when you've got comrades Tony Nwachukwu, Mark Pritchard and Dorian Concept on hand to provide African basslines, marmalade sandwiches and sunblock.

2-07

Just Words! - Russ Elevado, Piper Davis & Natalia Lafourcade

Written by Russ Elevado (USA), Oliver Johnson (AUT), Natalia Lafourcade (MEX), Piper Davis (CAN) & Nino Moschella (USA); produced by Russ Elevado; vocals by Natalia Lafourcade & Piper Davis; backing vocals by Fatima (UK); drums by Nino Moschella; Fender Rhodes by Dorian Concept; additional synths by Cristian Vogel (ESP)

Russ ‘The Dragon’ Elevado is so dedicated to audio, even his bubblebath is analogue. Put his flanging psychedelic flourishes together with some drunken modal wanderings from Dorian Concept, Nino Moschella in control of the kit, and a scene-setting vocal from Natalia and Piper – and what you end up with is powerful ammo for your next game of Scrabble roulette.

2-08

Bitter Sweet Farewell - Dyad, Miaau, Zolcan Breaker & Illuminated Faces

Written & produced by Evgeny Gavrilov (RUS), Oscar Casanovas (ESP), Felipe Salmon (PER) & Roman Tsepelev (RUS); guitar & bass by Dyad; synths by Zolcan Breaker & Miaau

What’s an Eastern bloc party without lost civilisations, nuclear weapons, Alexanderplatz hangovers, crossed telephone wires, sonnets of dark love and a mountain-top refuge? Get ready for the multi-stringed Russo-Latin soul interlude.

2-09

Tech Kids - Thibo Tazz & Zolcan Breaker

Written & produced by Thabo Rasenyalo (RSA) & Felipe Salmon (PER)

Welcome aboard the helicopter express from Lima to Cape Town. Pilot Thibo Tazz punches in some bouncy layers of noises and nooses, while Peruvian Zolcan Breaker knits it all together, like he usually does, with some panoramic vistas.

2-10

Solidify - Woon & Subeena

Written & produced by Sabina Plamenova (UK) & Jamie Woon (UK); lyrics by Jamie Woon & Robin Hannibal (DEN); vocals by Jamie Woon; Fender Rhodes & bass by Om’Mas Keith (USA); additional percussion by Te’Amir Yohannes Sweeney (USA)

Plankton and conga eels started winding their waists amidst chiming chords and delays when London city bass warriors Subeena and Jamie Woon wove their subaquatic magic on this soulful dubby jam. For whom the diving bell tolls.

2-11

Renew - Pursuit Grooves feat. Dennis Coffey

Written by Vanese Smith (USA) & Dennis Coffey (USA); produced by Pursuit Grooves; synth & drum programming by Pursuit Grooves; guitar by Dennis Coffey

Tens on the run? No beat escapes (Big) apple-snapping Pursuit Grooves, as she locks onto this one with mo' better Motown axeman Dennis Coffey, who reveals a penchant for perfectly dropping chords and notes in the spaces that only experience and open ears can tell you. Fairtrade!

2-12

How Many, How Many... - Natalia Lafourcade & Piper Davis

Written by Natalia Lafourcade (MEX); produced by Zolcan Breaker (PER); vocals by Natalia Lafourcade & Piper Davis (CAN)

Where evocative Mexican songstress Natalia Lafourcade finds these soundtracks for existentialist detectives stumped on a case is anyone's guess – probably in the secret pathways of Moctezuma’s palaces. But prime suspects Piper Davis and Zolcan Breaker aren't going to let Natalia get the holy grail of heists all on her own.

2-13

AAKA BAAT - Kornél Kovács

Written & produced by Kornél Kovács (SWE)

This twisted little ditty jumps along like an electric sheep on a hot tin roof, threatening to short circuit at a moment's notice. And if he does, he can always find refuge in the abandoned warehouse that Sebastian’s toys call home: Pinocchio, falcon, and new wave poodle included.

2-14

Impure - Jeff Risk

Written & produced by Jeffrey Risk (USA)

When it’s siesta time in Barcelona, it’s morning in Detroit. Michigan native Jeff Risk penned this sturdy wake up call, with synth pads that shimmer around the smoke stacks on the horizon, while a long line of open and closed hats and snares shuffle along the highway, clavs blinking to indicate the exit.

2-15

Lluvia Que Cae - Natalia Lafourcade

Written by Natalia Lafourcade (MEX); produced by Onra (FRA); vocals by Natalia Lafourcade

While everyone else was looking for the aircon, Natalia and Onra escaped to an Icelandic cave and found some vibes that were frozen under a glacier. Natalia delivers a chorus like she just ate a jalapeno popsicle, while Arnaud stabs at the heart of the beats like an absent-minded narwhal. Stalagmighty!

2-16

Analogue - Ruari, Zinc & Tom Oberheim

Written by Rory Donohue (IRL), Benjamin Pettit (UK) & Tom Oberheim (USA); produced by Ruari & Zinc; vocals by Tom Oberheim

When Bob Moog said "Just think of the inside of the Minimoog as a brain", he wasn't playing. Keep that in mind as Tom Oberheim's voice ricochets round your skull's disco, joining the dots like so much copper plate, over the progress of an Irishman and an Englishman in their quest for perpetual motion.

2-17

Obsessão - Pepepe & Violet

Written & produced by José Carlos Pesina Siller (MEX) & Maria Inés Borges Coutinho (POR); vocals by Violet

It Came From Tlaquepaque. Valley of the dolls viewmaster Pepepe keeps his thumbs busy with the kick-swerve combination moves, bringing an Ableton high player rating to rival Academy security guard Colin’s Guten Touch dream scores. On top of all that, Lisbonite Violet drops lyrical violence that would chase Boris Karloff out of his cave.

2-18

Sense - Kwazar, Author & El Santo

Written & produced by Marcin Cislo (POL), Luis Carlos Henriquez (VEN) & Leonardo Parra (COL)

They don't come much more abstract than this. Sometime in the future, John Cage's cryogenically frozen iChing will download itself to greet you. Don't be afraid! Sounds are your friends, so play nice together. Taking a different tack from terrorising everything with ears, the Diabolic Threesome round up their gremlins and give them carte blanche.
